Although this small Pacific village feels wonderfully remote, it’s actually well connected to Panama City by road, private shuttle, domestic flights and public transportation.
Whether you’re renting a car for a road trip across Panama, traveling on a backpacker’s budget or looking for the fastest way to reach the coast, there is an option that fits every style of travel.

🚗 Driving to Santa Catalina
For most travelers, renting a car is the best way to discover Panama.
The drive from Panama City takes approximately 6 hours, following the Pan-American Highway before turning south toward Santa Catalina.
The roads are in excellent condition, and as of 2025, the final road into Santa Catalina has been completely renovated. Contrary to what you may read in older travel guides, you do not need a 4×4. Any standard rental car can comfortably reach the village.
Having your own vehicle also gives you the freedom to stop along the way, explore small towns and discover places that most visitors simply drive past.
If you’re planning to continue your trip through Panama after Santa Catalina, renting a car is easily our favorite option.
🚌 Traveling by Bus
Traveling by bus is the most affordable way to reach Santa Catalina and a great option for solo travelers or backpackers.
The journey begins at Albrook Bus Terminal in Panama City.
From there, you’ll take:
- Panama City → Santiago
- Santiago → Soná
- Soná → Santa Catalina
Although it sounds like several connections, the journey is surprisingly straightforward. Local staff are very helpful, and if you’re unsure where to go, someone will almost always point you in the right direction.
The entire trip usually takes between 6 and 7 hours, depending on traffic leaving Panama City.
Expect to pay less than USD 20 for the entire journey.
One important tip: bring cash and small bills, as public buses do not accept credit cards.
✈️ Private Flights
Looking for the fastest way to reach Santa Catalina?
A private flight is an unforgettable experience.
Flights depart from Albrook Airport in Panama City and land at Lagobe Airstrip, located approximately 15 to 20 minutes from Santa Catalina.
The flight itself takes around 40 to 45 minutes, offering spectacular aerial views of Panama’s Pacific coastline.
Transfers between the airstrip and Santa Catalina can easily be arranged.

🚐 Private Shuttle
Private shuttles are an excellent choice for couples, families and travelers who simply want a stress-free journey.
Your driver will collect you directly from your hotel or the airport in Panama City before driving you comfortably to Santa Catalina.
Because several passengers are usually collected from different locations, the total journey generally takes between 6 and 7 hours.
It’s comfortable, convenient and one of the easiest ways to travel if you don’t want to drive yourself.

If you’re planning to spend four or more days in Santa Catalina, I almost always recommend renting a car.
Not because you need one in the village…
You absolutely don’t.
But because Panama has so many beautiful places to discover before and after Santa Catalina. Having your own car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and turn the journey into part of the adventure.
Once you arrive at Nukumi Club, you can simply leave your car in our private parking area and explore the village entirely on foot.

Road Conditions
One of the biggest misconceptions about Santa Catalina is that you need a 4×4 to get here.
That may have been true many years ago, but it isn’t anymore.
The road connecting the Pan-American Highway to Santa Catalina has been completely renovated, making the journey smooth and comfortable for all types of vehicles.
A standard rental car is more than enough, and you’ll have no problem reaching the village.
As with any road trip in Panama, we recommend driving during daylight whenever possible. Not because the roads are unsafe, but because you’ll enjoy the scenery much more and avoid unexpected obstacles such as wildlife or free-roaming cattle after dark.
Fuel Stops
Although Santa Catalina has a small fuel station selling Gasoline 91, Gasoline 95 and Diesel, we always recommend arriving with a full tank.
The last large and most reliable fuel stations are located in:
- ⛽ Santiago de Veraguas
- ⛽ Guarumal
- ⛽ El Tigre, the final service station before reaching Santa Catalina.
Stopping at El Tigre is our personal recommendation, especially if you plan to continue exploring after your stay.
Parking
Parking in Santa Catalina is generally easy, but spaces can become limited during holidays and long weekends.
One of the advantages of staying at Nukumi Club is that we offer free private parking exclusively for our guests.
Once you’ve parked your car, you can leave it there for your entire stay.
Almost everything in Santa Catalina, including beaches, restaurants, cafés, surf shops and tour operators, is within a comfortable walking distance.
That’s one of the reasons visitors fall in love with the village.
Is Santa Catalina Safe?
Yes.
Santa Catalina is considered one of the safest tourist destinations in Panama.
Like anywhere in the world, common sense goes a long way. Avoid leaving valuables unattended on the beach, lock your accommodation when you’re away and don’t leave expensive equipment visible inside your car.
The village has a relaxed atmosphere, and most visitors quickly notice how friendly and welcoming the local community is.
Many travelers walk around day and night without any concerns.
Navigation Tips
Getting lost is surprisingly difficult.
Google Maps works well throughout the area, and most hotels, restaurants and activity providers are correctly listed.
Before leaving Panama City, we recommend downloading the area on Google Maps for offline use. Mobile coverage is generally good in Santa Catalina, but having offline maps can be useful if you’re exploring nearby beaches or driving through more remote areas.
