Introduction
Santa Catalina may look like a tiny fishing village on the map, but don’t let its size fool you.
This little corner of Panama is packed with unforgettable experiences. From world-class diving and surfing to horseback rides along the beach, hidden islands and spectacular sunsets, Santa Catalina offers far more than most travelers expect.
The secret isn’t trying to do everything.
It’s choosing experiences that truly connect you with the village, its people and the incredible nature that surrounds it.
After welcoming hundreds of guests at Nukumi Club, these are the experiences we recommend over and over again.
Let’s dive in.
1. Explore Coiba National Park
If you only do one activity during your stay…
Make it Coiba.
Whether you choose snorkeling, scuba diving or simply spending the day discovering its pristine beaches, Coiba National Park is the experience that puts Santa Catalina on the world map.
UNESCO-listed, incredibly biodiverse and still remarkably untouched, it’s simply unmissable.
⭐ Don’t miss: The snorkeling stops and the white-sand beaches.
2. Learn to Surf
Santa Catalina is one of Panama’s most iconic surf destinations.
Whether you’ve never stood on a board before or you’ve been surfing for years, there’s a wave waiting for you.
Playa Estero is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers, while La Punta is one of the country’s most famous waves for experienced surfers.
If you’ve never tried surfing before…
This is the place to do it.
3. Ride Horses Along the Beach or Through the Jungle
This is one of the most underrated experiences in Santa Catalina.
Ride along Playa Estero during sunset or venture inland through rivers, jungle trails and local farmland.
It’s peaceful, authentic and suitable even if you’ve never ridden a horse before.
4. Kayak to Santa Catalina Island
Rent a kayak early in the morning and paddle across to Santa Catalina Island.
Spend a few hours exploring quiet beaches, snorkeling around the rocky coastline or simply enjoying the feeling of having an island almost entirely to yourself.
Just remember to check the tides before setting off.
5. Discover Cébaco Island
Far less visited than Coiba, Cébaco Island is one of the region’s hidden treasures.
Organized as a private boat excursion, it’s perfect for travelers looking for empty beaches, crystal-clear water and an experience away from the crowds.
It’s one of my favorite recommendations for returning visitors.
6. Watch Sunset at La Punta
Every evening, surfers and locals gather at La Punta to watch the sun disappear into the Pacific Ocean.
Even if you don’t surf, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Santa Catalina to end the day.
Bring a drink, sit on the rocks and simply enjoy the view.
7. Join a Yoga Class
Santa Catalina’s slow pace makes it the perfect place to reconnect with yourself.
Whether you’re staying for a few days or a few weeks, a morning yoga session is the perfect complement to surfing or diving.
If you’re staying at Nukumi Club, you’ll also have access to our peaceful yoga rancho, surrounded by tropical gardens and available exclusively for our guests.
8. Enjoy a Relaxing Massage
After several days in the ocean, your body will thank you.
A relaxing massage is the perfect way to recover after surfing, diving or simply traveling around Panama.
It’s one of the simplest luxuries you can give yourself.
9. Taste the Village
Sometimes the best memories come from the simplest moments.
Share a pizza at Jammin Pizza, enjoy Italian gelato at La Mancheria, browse the artisan boutiques like Marmoris Boutique or discover local designers at Santa Sofia inside Manifest Collective.
Santa Catalina isn’t only about adventure.
It’s also about slowing down.
10. Simply Do Nothing
This may sound strange…
But it’s probably the most authentic experience of all.
Read a book by the pool.
Take a hammock nap.
Watch tropical birds.
Listen to the rain during Green Season.
Order fresh fruit.
Walk to the beach.
Here in Santa Catalina, doing nothing often becomes the memory people treasure most.
And if you’re staying at Nukumi Club, you’ll quickly understand why so many guests extend their stay.
🌴 Clara’s Local Tip
Don’t try to tick every box in one weekend.
Santa Catalina isn’t a destination you rush through.
It’s a place you experience slowly.
Leave space in your itinerary for unexpected conversations, spontaneous sunsets and moments where you simply decide to stay by the pool a little longer.
Those unplanned moments often become the ones you’ll remember most.
